For R&D, do not stare only at writing code. Finding the right pain point matters more than anything

We often imagine top technical people sitting at a computer all day, furiously writing code. Nimit Sohani, an AI researcher, former Citadel quant researcher, and Stanford PhD, cuts through that assumption directly: in research, 90% of the effort goes into finding the problem. If the direction you choose is something nobody cares about, or if today’s technology simply cannot solve it, writing more code will not save the project.

Think about the teams we manage. Do we often build features just for the sake of building features? Strong R&D people spend a lot of time reading papers and watching where the industry is moving. From a huge pile of information, they have to pick out the real problem that has both business value and a path to implementation. That requires unusually sharp business sensitivity and technical taste.

Sometimes going slowly is the faster route. For managers, instead of pushing people to produce a runnable program as quickly as possible, it may be better to leave them more room to explore what problem should actually be solved. Choosing the right target matters far more than firing blindly.
