Do not burn money training models. Standing on giants’ shoulders is the better path

When people talk about LLMs, many assume they have to spend heavily to train their own unique foundation model. Laguna, an AI legal-tech startup overseas, did not do that difficult and unrewarding work when its founders were getting started. In the early days they only had a few engineers. Instead of throwing money at the trend, they focused tightly on the application layer.

I strongly agree with that choice. The underlying technology changes too quickly. A fine-tuning result you paid heavily for a few months ago can be crushed the moment a major vendor releases a new version. The smart approach is to be a ruthless passerby: whichever foundation system is fast, accurate, and reasonably priced today is the one you switch to. Put all the energy into the business-side systems around it, especially workflows that customers can use out of the box.

Companies using these systems are not really buying some impressive technical term. They are buying results. If you can process tedious work smoothly, who cares whose code runs underneath? That is how business should be done. Stop reinventing wheels and compete on who can attach the wheel to the right vehicle.
